The Russian invasion of Ukraine is unconscionable and completely unjustified. It is more than time that the world comes to see that the shelling of cities and bombing of civilians is, with no possible qualifications, a war crime of the scale of those punished at Nuremberg. As with all such situations, however, the simple "good vs. evil" narrative of the story needs to be examined skeptically. The war is being presented as some sort of "attack on Democracy" without cultural nuance or historical context. Our ability as Americans to control the behavior of Putin and Russia is minuscule, but at least in theory we have some control over the behavior of the U.S government. Here is an OpEd by Thomas Friedman of the NY Times attempting to provide some of that historical context, and spotlight the fingerprints of the US in its creation. For a more in-depth look, I'll provide a link to a 2015 talk by John Mearscheimer, a political scientist at the University of Chicago -- his prescience will astonish you. And for a much longer analysis from a historical perspective, here is a link to an article by Wolfgang Streeck, a prominent German sociologist and former Director of the Max Planck Institute https://newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/fog-of-war
