OAKMONT PROGRESSIVES:
WHAT DO WE STAND FOR?

"It's time to make our government work for all of us... and not just the 1%."

Bernie Sanders

-

Oakmont Progressives is an educational and social club that welcomes all Oakmonters.  As Progressives, we stand for a government OF, BY  and FOR the people instead of an oligarchy of billionaires.

As Progressives, we recognize that governments at most levels have been captured by large corporations and the wealthy.  We argue that the power of the state should be used to protect the weak and disadvantaged from the depredations of the wealthy and large corporations.  The natural operation of the capitalist system concentrates wealth and power into the hands of fewer and fewer people, and that tendency must be counterbalanced if we are to have a democracy that affords a decent life for all its people.

FOREIGN POLICY:  Diplomacy over war; ending the global military expansion pursued by both Democratic & Republican administrations as well as their drone wars; reducing our military budget to reinvest in human needs. Work with our allies to address international terrorism and its root causes.

INEQUALITY:  Ending the transfer of wealth to the billionaire class.  Supporting  the 99% with  a living wage, a jobs program, restoring American manufacturing, encouraging unionization, affordable housing, a single payer health plan, tuition free public colleges, universal childcare and taxing Wall Street.  An economy that protects the human needs & dignity of all people – children, the elderly, the sick, working people and the poor.

CLIMATE CHANGE:  Instead of subsidizing massive fossil fuel corporations we support accelerating the transition to a clean energy economy; an economy that is powered by more than 80% clean energy sources by 2050.  We support a carbon tax and a ban on fracking and nuclear power.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM:  We support a publicly financed transparent system of  campaign financing, the elimination of super PACs, giving states the power to regulate money in elections & overturning Citizens United.  Campaign finance reform must be accompanied by efforts to strengthen voting rights.

TRADE:  Fair trade to protect consumers & workers rights as well as the environment instead of free trade which lets multinational corporations exploit labor worldwide.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE:  Addressing the causes of incarceration instead of simply imprisoning more people.  Ending police militarization, private prisons & decriminalizing  marijuana.

IMMIGRATION:  Enacting a humane immigration reform policy that reverses the criminalization of immigrants, keeps families together,, expands support for refugees escaping violence, provides a roadmap to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and reassesses the effect our trade policies and political interventions in countries around the world have had on migration.

"You built a factory out there, good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads that the rest of us paid for. You hired workers that the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for."

Elizabeth Warren
